Kawah Ijen crater lake, which is located in East Java, Indonesia, is a renowned local tourist attraction for the exotic landscape, as well as for the sulphur mining actions carried out there daily by the local miners.

Most tourists are happy enough with a day visit, however, they are missing some rarer beauties which only unfold as night falls.

The sulphur vent where the miners work generates great heat. The molten sulphur near the vent ignites and turns into blue flames, which can only be seen in the dark. On a clear, moonless night, the surreal view of the blue flame flickering in the massive caldera is accompanied by a pristine, starry sky. Further adding to the scene, an intense red airglow outburst was in progress while the photo was taken.
